Women’s National Team match will precede Revolution’s 2007 home opener against Toronto FC
Foxborough, Mass. - The U.S. Soccer Federation announced today that the U.S. Women’s National Team will face the Mexico Women’s National Team in its previously announced 2007 domestic opener on April 14 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The match will serve as the opening game of a doubleheader also featuring the New England Revolution and Major League Soccer’s newest team, Toronto FC.
Kickoff for the U.S. match will be at 5 p.m., followed by the Revs’ 2007 home opener against Toronto FC at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The U.S. women will be playing their first match in the Boston area since the historic 1-0 win against Norway on Oct. 1, 2003, during the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinals at Gillette Stadium. Abby Wambach scored the USA’s goal on a header in front of more than 20,000 fans.
The match in Boston could feature several players with local ties on the U.S. roster. Current Boston residents Kate Markgraf, Angela Hucles, and Connecticut native Kristine Lilly, all played for the Boston Breakers in the WUSA.
“We always look forward to playing Mexico because we know it will be an open, attacking game,” said U.S. WNT head coach Greg Ryan. “Hopefully, by the time we get to Boston, Mexico will have qualified for the Women’s World Cup and the game will have that extra edge. I’m a big fan of (Mexico head coach) Leo Cuellar and what he has done for their program. He always brings a team ready to compete and has some very talented players with the ball at their feet.”
While the USA has not played in the Boston area in more than three years, the Americans are very familiar with Mexico, having played them twice in 2006, the second time during the 2006 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup where the winner earned an automatic berth to the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup, to be held this fall in China. The USA’s 2-0 victory in that Gold Cup semifinal sent Mexico to the tournament’s third-place match, where they defeated Jamaica to earn a spot in a two-game playoff against Japan.
Mexico and Japan will meet on March 10 (in Japan) and March 17 (in Mexico) with the winner earning the final berth to this year’s Women’s World Cup. Should all go well for Mexico in the playoff, the April 14 contest in Foxborough could match two Women’s World Cup-bound teams in the middle of their pre-tournament preparations.
The match against Mexico also renews a rivalry that has become increasingly intense during the past few years as the tricolor feminil has steadily improved on the world stage. The match during the Women’s Gold Cup was certainly one of the most tense meetings in recent years and the USA’s 3-1 win in Rochester, N.Y., on Sept. 13, 2006, featured Mexico’s first goal against the USA since 2003.
The Mexico match will be the first of at least six domestic matches for the USA leading into the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The USA came out of a difficult group to win the Four Nations Tournament in China in January, and next will travel to Portugal for the Algarve Cup in March.

Sessions will be guided by the same professional soccer instructors from Massachusetts Premier Soccer who help run the first grade program. Newton Girls Soccer will provide a soccer shirt. The cost is $70.

On Wednesday, September 21, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham will present a special lecture for Newton Girls Soccer families on avoiding and treating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, with an emphasis on knee health for adolescents.
Orthopaedic surgeon Matthew Messina, D.O., will discuss strategies to help young athletes avoid sports injuries as well as the treatments available when injuries do occur. After the 7-8 p.m. lecture, entitled “Knee Health for Athletes: Risk factors, Prevention Strategies and Treatment of Noncontact ACL Injuries,” he will take questions.
The ACL ligament is a stretchy band that connects the thigh bone to the shin bone and stabilizes the knee when it is in motion. ACL injuries are among the most common in sports and affect between 100,000 and 200,000 Americans each year. Athletes affected by ACL injuries include those who play soccer, basketball, football and volleyball.
Dr. Messina specializes in sports medicine at Needham Orthopaedics, a Needham-based community practice with a wide regional following, and performs surgery at BID-Needham. He has served as team physician for the University of Maine Black Bears Division 1 athletic teams.
Dr. Messina’s talk was developed as part of the hospital’s 2005 medical sponsorship of Newton Girls Soccer. On Columbus Day weekend, the hospital will again provide medical support for the annual Newton Girls Soccer Tournament.
All lecture attendees will receive a free pedometer.
The free event will be held in the Dickerson Room near the main patient entrance at BID-Needham, 148 Chestnut Street, Needham. Parking is free. The lecture is part of the hospital’s 2005-2006 community education series of lectures, columns, cable television programming, newsletters and events on the theme “Aging Gracefully for Young and Old.”
Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Needham, a community hospital providing acute care to the Metro West area of Boston, joined Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in 2002. Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians from BIDMC provide the Needham hospital with critical hospital-based services, including cardiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, oncology, pathology and radiology.

Why is this cleat exchange different from all other cleat exchanges?
Answer: we need a fresh supply of cleats to
exchange.
In the past, we'd keep unwanted cleats from exchange to
exchange.
Over the years, we built up a small collection of cleats that no Newton family
claimed.
Last year, we donated our entire unclaimed collection to the children of a
village in Honduras.
We are thus starting this year's cleat
exchange with a zero supply of cleats.
We therefore need everyone who can to jump start this year's cleat exchange by
dropping off your extra cleats ahead of time.
Cleats are being being accepted in advance at 59 Oxford
Road, Newton Centre
and 35 Kingswood Road, Auburndale
. . . or bring them on September 5.

As the parent of a Newton Girls Soccer player, do you ever wonder about the goals and philosophy of the program, how placement decisions are made, and how the travel and intramural programs work?
To talk about those topics and more, and to answer any questions you may have, Newton Girls Soccer is holding a “town meeting” for parents on April 5, at Brown Middle School, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
NGS president George Gardner said, “Newton Girls Soccer is designed to provide a safe and nurturing environment for girls to have fun, learn a broad range of skills, and develop a sense of teamwork and sportsmanship. This meeting provides a great opportunity for parents to learn more about our program.”
Newton Girls Soccer’s spring season starts April 9 at fields throughout Newton for both travel and intramural programs. This spring, the intramural program (which is still accepting new players) involves nearly 650 girls, ages six through 18, on 75 teams. The travel program involves 600 girls, ages 9-18, on 40 teams.
Newton Girls Soccer, with 1,250 girls playing soccer this spring, is the largest organization of its kind in New England. It is a 100 percent parent-run, volunteer organization that is always looking for parents to get involved.

Dear Youth Sports Coaches,
Youth Sports Safety Day was introduced by Newton-Wellesley Hospital in 2002, and a great success among attending coaches. This year’s program reflects your input and changes to help you better prepare your athletes and prevent injuries.
Newton-Wellesley is committed to providing community health education, especially programs such as this one which will enable our youth to enjoy all of the benefits of team athletics under the leadership of coaches who are informed about injury prevention.
Not unlike learning CPR, the information provided in this daylong program is vitally important and requires continuous updating. All participants will receive a certificate of attendance, a comprehensive set of reference materials, and a first aid kit in preparation for the spring season. Please be sure to review materials, ask questions of the presenters, and discuss ideas with fellow coaches.
Yours in Sports,
Michael Jellinek, MD
