NEW PLAYER TRAINING RESOURCES FOR NEWTON GIRLS
SOCCER PARENT COACHES!
The Newton Girls Soccer (NGS) Board of Directors has worked very closely with
Mass Premier Soccer (MPS) in an attempt to find ways to make the NGS program
better for our players and our parent coach volunteers. As a result of that
effort, we developed the following goals:
To address those goals, the decision was made to
make Newton Girls Soccer’s largest ever investment into player and coach
development. The result is two exciting programs: a Director of Coaching
Program, to provide better access to the resources of the professional soccer
coaches at Mass. Premier Soccer, and a written curriculum and age-appropriate
practice plan designed by Mass Premier Soccer especially for the parent coaches
of Newton Girls Soccer.
Director of Coaching Program:
- Members of the Massachusetts Premier Soccer staff will act as the
Director of Coaching (DOC) and Assistant Director of Coaching (ADOC) for NGS.
These individuals will oversee NGS player and parent coach training. The DOC
will focus on the travel program and the ADOC will focus on player and parent
coach training within the intramural program.
- Each season the DOC and ADOC will provide approximately 250 hours
of on-field professional instruction and guidance to NGS players and parent
coaches.
Coaching Curriculum and Practice
Plan:
- A realistic and age-appropriate player training curriculum has
been created by Massachusetts Premier Soccer for use by NGS parent coaches at
every level of play. The curriculum also contains a set of practice plans, with
coaching points and explanations for each of the suggested soccer activities.
- MPS has also created a guide to player development and
progression. This guide, the “U6-U14 Age-Specific Coaching Goals/Guidelines”,
provides parents with realistic and achievable soccer-specific goals for each
age group. Specific age-appropriate goals for development of the 4 pillars of
soccer (technical, tactical, physical and psychological) are identified at each
level of play.
- Both the curriculum/practice plan and the guide to player
development are available to parent coaches on the Coaching page of the Newton
Girls Soccer web site under “Coach Development”. Passwords can be obtained from
the grade coordinators.
We believe that these tools, the curriculum and practice plan, together with the
ability to obtain individual guidance from a professional soccer coach, will
make it easier for our parent coaches to spend their time coaching and
communicating with the girls, instead of spending it researching soccer practice
games, drills and activities. Ultimately, they will be happier, and more
effective, coaches of your daughter’s team.
We hope that you will find these programs to be a great
addition to your Newton Girls Soccer experience. Have a great season!
The Newton Girls Soccer Board of Directors.
