Newton Girls Soccer is looking for new coaches and assistant coaches…….and we hope you’ll consider participating in one of the most enjoyable experiences you’ll have with your daughter and her friends.
Newton Girls Soccer (NGS) is the largest girls soccer program in the state and is comprised solely of volunteer coaches and league managers. New coaches are needed every year, particularly in the younger grades, and often start as assistant coaches. The reward? An opportunity to teach your daughter and her teammates new soccer skills and a love for the game, plus encourage their personal growth through a fulfilling team sports activity. It’s a great parenting experience….
“…a terrific chance to participate in an after-school activity with my daughters and ensure they’re having fun”
Pam Woodworth, coaching for over 5 years
“I started as an assistant coach and took an introductory licensing course, which was excellent…coaching is a great opportunity to encourage my daughter’s participation in team sports and help her develop her athletic skills”
Norman Berman, second year coach
“It’s a wonderful feeling to be part of their lives…to guide them towards a positive sense of themselves as an athlete, a competitor and team player. I know the impact of coaching on a player doesn’t last a season, but a whole life.”
Ellen Treat, coaching for over 12 years

I have a few questions….
- I’ve never coached before; what’s involved? Coaches are responsible for organizing and leading one day a week practice sessions (typically 1 hour) and making up the team rooster for the weekly game. There are also some light administrative duties (e.g., team equipment handling, season end player evaluations, etc.). The
NGS Grade Coordinators will guide you throughout the season and the team parents are always a big help.
- I’ve never played soccer; how can I coach it? Most coaches have
never played organized soccer before—we’ll teach you! NGS has instructional clinics, easy licensing courses and readily available coaching material. Also, new coaches typically start paired as an assistant coach with experienced coaches.
- I’m not very athletic; is coaching strenuous? While good coaching requires some practice drill demonstration, coaching does not require that you actively participate in the practices.
- I don’t see many women coaches—is this a “dad thing?” No! We want
more women coaches to better serve as role models for their daughters.
