 The NGS Club Soccer Program

Play high level soccer in a club-like environment right here in Newton!

The NGS Club Soccer Program is for those girls seeking an additional competitive soccer experience beyond their NGS Travel Team.  The club teams are professionally coached with an extra practice and game each week beyond the two travel team practices and Saturday travel team game.

We're taking some of the best aspects of professionally coached club soccer and bringing it within the NGS organization

  • Highly qualified coaches (see bio's below) will run all practices and coach all games
  • All practices will be held in Newton
  • All home games will be played in Newton
  • Practices will be coordinated with players' travel team practice schedules to minimize conflicts

Like the private club programs, interested players will try out for their team.  The tryouts will be separate from the NGS Travel team assessments, and will be led by Gary Beatty, the NGS Director of Coaching and the coaches for each of the Club teams.  Gary and these coaches will determine which girls will be invited to join the Club team.  Unlike NGS travel teams, there are a limited number of players who will make each team and not all players will be invited to join their age group's club team.

We expect to have club teams in the fall at the U10, U11 and U12 levels and for the U9 age group, we're currently planning on a "development" team that trains once a week with a professional coach but doesn't enter a competitive league for Sunday games.

The coaches for the program are listed below:

Caleb Thomson

Caleb is the Varsity Soccer Coach and the Director of the Soccer Camp at the Fessenden School in Newton.  He was the head coach for his older daughter's Newton Girls Soccer U14 team which won the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions (MTOC) in 2011 and currently coaches his younger daughter's U14 team with Owen Pennant-Jones.  Caleb is one of our current NGS club team coaches and we're thrilled to have Caleb return to coach an NGS club team next year.

Owen Pennant-Jones

Owen is the Newton South Girls' Varsity Assistant Coach (since 2000) and has been a professional trainer for years for numerous NGS teams and he coached with Caleb's U14 team which won the MTOC.  Owen is also a current NGS club team coach and we're excited to have him return to coach an NGS club team next year.

Brian Rooney

Brian was the Newton North Girls' Varsity Soccer Head Coach from 2000 through 2008 and coached a team with soccer club the FC Greater Boston Bolts from Fall 1995 - Spring 1999.  He has also coached his sons' and daughter's NGS and NYS teams one of which won the President's Cup U11 Championship.

Note: We are currently discussing an opportunity to partner with our local professional women's soccer team, the Boston Breakers, to further enhance our Club Soccer Program.  Stay tuned as we're optimistic we'll be able to add a unique feature to the NGS club team program.
