Referee uniforms:

Licensed referees are expected to wear a full referee uniform to all games. This includes an official (yellow) shirt (tucked in!) with a 2007 referee badge, black referee shorts, black footwear and black referee socks with three white stripes at the top. Your refereeing performance will most likely be assessed by a Mass State Referee Committee assessor at some point this season so you should be professionally dressed at all games. Other necessary parts of the ‘kit’ are an appropriate watch – preferably one with a ‘countdown timer’, a solid whistle that enables you to send different ‘messages’, a ‘wallet’ with red and yellow cards, a set of flags, a writing tool, and something on which to keep score. Having a decent bag to keep things in obviously makes sense as well.

While yellow is the ‘primary’ shirt, the referee ‘on the way up’ will probably want to put some of her or his earnings into additional jerseys, such as different colors (black, blue, red are the ‘alternate colors’) and/or sleeve lengths (short and long are the two that come to mind here).

You can sometimes get lucky on eBay, just like with anything else, especially with used shirts.

Intramural referees:

There is currently no official uniform requirement, though if you happen to have a yellow NGS intramural jersey, please wear it. Otherwise, please avoid orange and white (the two colors the Newton teams will be wearing) shirts and try to have as much black as possible in the shorts, socks, and shoes. Please keep shirts tucked in. You will also need a whistle and a watch, and having a writing tool is useful for getting your form signed so you can get paid.
